then you've seen me, I always leave with less than I had before
Series: The Doctrine of Labyrinths
Name: Mildmay the Fox (goes by Mildmay Foxe. Short for Mild-may-your-sufferings-be-at-the-hands-of-the-wicked, but he doesn't like to talk about that.)
Age: 22
Gender: Male
then you've seen me, bet I can make you smile when the blood, it hits the floor
Appearance: Mildmay looks like the worse sort of lowlife thug, and he knows it. His hands and arms are covered with scars and calluses from knife fights but what grabs the eye first is the huge, ugly scar that runs up the entire left side of his face from his mouth to his hairline. It twists his mouth into a perpetual sneer and causes his speech to come out slurred and difficult to understand, especially when combined with his lower city accent – he’s used to having to repeat himself a few times until people understand what he’s saying. Because of the damage done by the injury and the fact that it did not heal as cleanly as it could have he has little to no mobility or feeling on that side of his face. He is incredibly self-conscious about the scar, and doesn’t like people to watch him when he eats because of it. He also rarely smiles unless he wants to scare someone, and generally keeps his face in an impassive, stony mask.

Scar aside he’s not unattractive, with green eyes and fox-red hair that he often pulls back into a braid or hides under scarves when he wants to be inconspicuous. He dresses in dark colors, typically all black to signify his servitude to Felix, and usually has a hidden knife tucked inside his boot. He’s average height, standing at 5’8 but his appearance makes it hard for him to blend into a crowd. It’s also easy to forget how young he really is, because of the hardened expression he usually wears.

He is strong, and would move very gracefully were it not for an awkward limp in his right leg. The death spell that was contained there twisted the bone of his thigh out slightly, and also makes it nearly impossible for him to bend his knee. It also left behind countless deep, nasty looking scars that are slightly reminiscent of twisting vines. He uses a cane from time to time although he would prefer not to. The limp gets worse if he overstrains it and he has an especially hard time with stairs. He doesn’t complain about it, although he does resent that because of it he is no longer the successful cat burglar that he once was.
tell me, friend, can you ask for anything more?
Personality: Mildmay tends to act on the assumption that most people think he’s stupid; his speech is hard to understand, he’s clearly uneducated and he doesn’t show much, if anything, of what he is thinking. If he’s not going to have to spend a lot of time with them he doesn’t bother doing anything to try to change their mind, just stays silent and slightly sullen. In reality he is quite clever and thinks quickly on his feet; he has spent his whole life being trained as a thief and assassin, and tends to approach any given situation from that mindset. He is also unswerving in his devotion and loyalty to those close to him, and will bravely put himself in harms way to keep them safe. He’s incredibly determined; if he sets about a task, he finishes it no matter how difficult or painful it may become. He tends to find an ironic sense of humor about everything, even if he doesn’t show it. He’s barely literate, but loves to hear and tell stories, something he has a particular talent for.

He also has nightmares on a fairly regular basis, and tends to be in a bad mood on the days after this happens. He has never really gotten over Ginevra’s death and is still haunted by that grief and by the memories of his Keeper as well as his capture by the Bastion, an experience he has no real memory of. It’s hard to see how much these issues weigh him down however without getting to know him better because he’s a very private person. He has incredibly low self-esteem, genuinely believing himself to be stupid, unattractive, and not worth much at all. He doesn’t feel comfortable with sympathy or concern because he’s not used to getting it and will tend to brush it off dismissively.
tell me can you ask for anything more?
Particulars: Mildmay has spent his whole life being trained as an pickpocket, cat burglar and, later, an assassin. He is no longer able to make a living as such because of his lame leg, but he still knows all the tricks of the trade; breaking into houses, picking locks and slitting throats are just some of his skills in this area. He also is a good climber – part of the breaking and entering business – even with his leg he can scale most buildings easily. He’s very good at most card games – and at cheating at them - and lately has taken to using this as a primary source of income.

He’s a good fighter, particularly with knives even though he has a lame leg. He knows how to handle himself against a single opponent or a gang, although if the numbers are stacked too highly against him he can be overwhelmed.

He’s a wonderful storyteller, and remembers every tale he hears. He doesn’t like talking about his past or things that have happened to him but when he does he tends to treat it all in the same manner he does any other story.

He has an incredible sense of direction, and is particularly good with mazes, even if he has never been through them before. He never gets lost unless there is magic involved.

The only possessions of any sort of importance he owns are a small knife he keeps in his boot and a dark cane with the head of a smiling animal carved at the top he is occasionally forced to use to help him get around.

Finally, he is bound by the obligation d’âme to his half-brother Felix, a wizard. Because of this he cannot be killed by magic (although he can certainly still die of more natural means) as a result of the protection spells that are a part of it. The downside though is that he has to obey any orders Felix gives him, and has a difficult time being too far away from him.
these things that have comforted me, I drive away
Canon History: Mildmay was born in the lower city of Mélusine to a prostitute who sold him as a kept thief when he was four years old. His Keeper, Kolkhis, trained him to be a pickpocket and thief, like many children in the lower city. This all changed when he was injured in a knife fight at 14 that left his face horribly scarred and made him too memorable and conspicuous to be a successful thief. Kolkhis realized this and decided to focus on teaching him to be an assassin instead. Around this time she also took him as a lover, a sexually abusive relationship Mildmay has never really gotten over. When he was 16 Kolkhis was hired to help in a plot to kill Cerberus Cressent, the Witchfinder Extraordinaire. Mildmay was selected to do the job and succeeded in part thanks to a series of spells that would protect him from the death curse that would strike down anyone who killed a wizard. As long as he stayed away from the Mirador – the wizard palace at the heart of the city Mélusine - and did not come into contact with the Lord Protector who ruled it he would survive and the curse would not strike him.

Mildmay continued to work as an assassin for Kolkhis until he was about 17, at which time he finally worked up the courage to escape her clutches and make a living for himself as a cat burglar. A few years later he was hired by a young woman named Ginevra to steal a set of ancient jewels she planned to sell. He succeeded in getting them and when she then told him she had agreed to sell the jewels to Vey Coruscant, a dangerous and powerful blood-witch he offered to act as a bodyguard when she delivered them. Vey attempted to have them killed while the trade was taking place but the two escaped and soon afterwards became lovers. For the next few months their lives were relatively uneventful, except for the growing panic in the lower city when the Virtu, a powerful magical artifact that protected the city, was mysteriously destroyed. Mildmay and Ginevra split up not long afterwards amid a series of fights, but he was brokenhearted when she was killed by Vey Coruscant soon afterwards.

Down on his luck and needing some money he decided to rob a hotel, but the first room Mildmay burst into contained a wizard named Mavortian von Herber who had just cast a spell to summon someone who could help him in a complicated revenge scheme. Apparently that someone was Mildmay, and Mavortian hired him to help track down a fellow wizard Felix Harrowgate, the same one who had broken the Virtu. They found him, along with several other wizards in the nearby city of Hermione, where Mildmay received a shock; physically he and Felix appeared almost identical and it took only a few minutes of questioning to realize they were half-brothers. The situation was complicated by the fact that Felix had lost his mind while breaking the Virtu and was insane. Still, Mildmay was instantly protective of his newly found big brother and decided to stick around. This ended up being a bad idea since a few minutes later he bumped into none other than the Lord Protector of the Mirador and the slow and painful death curse that had been averted for so long struck. Felix managed to avert it somewhat and confined it to a shard of glass that Mildmay had to keep with him at all times as protection. Still, it was better than death and as a result he agreed to accompany Felix to find the fabled Gardens of Nephele where his mind might be healed.

The journey was a nightmare; Felix was insane and often attempted to run away or seemed to forget who Mildmay was entirely. With their bright red hair, Mildmay’s scar and Felix’s wizard tattoos they were also very conspicuous and it was difficult to avoid detection as they passed through hostile territory, particularly the enemy wizard fortress of the Bastion. Eventually they reached the coast where they could find a ship to take to their final destination. This presented a new set of problems as Felix was terrified of water and Mildmay had a difficult time even getting him on the boat, much less dealing with him once they set off. Disaster struck when they were only a day or so away though, as a terrible storm blew in and the vessel began to sink. A panicked and insane Felix attacked Mildmay, and in the ensuing fight the piece of glass that had shielded him from the death spell was broken, the shards burying themselves into his right leg. Despite being barely able to stand and in horrible pain from the spell Mildmay still managed to get Felix off the boat and onto a piece of wreckage which he somehow found the strength to tow to shore before passing out. They were discovered by acolytes from the Gardens and taken back to be healed.

Since it was clear the spell on him would only have been cast on a murderer, the healers gave Mildmay little to no attention beyond saving his life. As the weeks passed his leg got no better and he eventually had to face the fact that he was going to spend the rest of his life as a cripple. The only good thing was that Felix’s mind was finally healed and he revealed more of what had happened to him in the first place; his master Malkar Gennadion had used his power to break the Virtu and driven Felix insane in the process. When he announced his plans to go back and try to fix it, Mildmay agreed to come along.

There were a few adventures along the way, most notably the investigation of an ancient labyrinth with the help of an actress turned governess named Mehitabel Parr who joined them on their journey. Mildmay and Mehitabel also staged a rescue attempt for Mavortian von Herber who they discovered had been taken captive and was going to be executed. It was during this rescue that Mildmay finally realized just how impossible it would be for him to return to his former life as a thief; he had too many enemies in the lower city and with his bad leg he would be unable to stay away from them and out of trouble for long. So he did the only thing he could think of, and asked Felix to cast the obligation d’âme on him, a powerful protection spell that would bind him to Felix. It would prevent him from being killed but would also mean he had to obey Felix unconditionally. It was a risk, given Felix’s manipulative, occasionally unpleasant personality but he reasoned it was better than ending up dead. When they finally returned to the Mirador and it was revealed that Mildmay had murdered Cerberus Cressent it became obvious that the Obligation d’âme had been a good idea after all. It protected him from the anger of the other wizards and eventually they got used to his presence as Felix’s shadow.

Felix succeeded in repairing the Virtu, but only days later received a letter from Malkar Gennadion attempting to blackmail him and revealing that he was working with Vey Coruscant in a scheme to kill the Lord Protector. Instead of telling the other wizards as Mildmay suggested, he ordered Mildmay to assassinate Vey Coruscant. Mildmay had a bad feeling about it from the start but because of the Obligation d’âme literally could not say no. The plan went smoothly at first and he was able to sneak into Vey’s house and murder her. It turned out to have been a trap – admittedly one intended for Felix – though and Malkar was waiting for him. He captured Mildmay, brought him back to the Bastion, and tortured him in an attempt to get to Felix. What, specifically, was done to him Mildmay does not know; his mind, unable to cope with the trauma of what happened, developed a sort of selective amnesia leaving him unable to remember what happened in the Bastion although given what is known of Malkar physical, psychological and sexual torture is implied. After two weeks however he was placed in a cell with two other prisoners, both wizards, and after a few days succeeded in picking the lock to their door with a piece of metal from their lamp. While leading his fellow prisoners out he literally bumped into Felix and Mehitabel who had just arrived on a rescue mission to free him. Mehitabel helped the other wizards escape while Felix and Mildmay tracked down Malkar and killed him.

Mildmay hardly spoke on the journey back to Mélusine, partly because he was struggling to recover from what had been done to him but also because of the conflicting feelings he felt about still being forced to act as an assassin. Mehitabel eventually managed to break him out of his stupor, partly by talking to him and partly by hooking up with him. When they finally got back to the Mirador Felix finally apologized for his actions which had led to Mildmay’s capture, admitting that he had been wrong.
this place that is my home I cannot stay
Crux: As much as he loved his brother and wanted to accept his apology, Mildmay just could not fully believe Felix would be able to refrain from using his power over him again.
Tangent: Instead of remaining in Mélusine with Felix and Mehitabel, Mildmay decided to set out on his own. He did not really have a destination in mind or any sort of goal, he just felt he needed some time to get his mind back together and figure out what to do with himself; a life of crime was out of the question, and he did not enjoy living in the Mirador. There was not anyplace he belonged except Mélusine but living there was too dangerous. Eventually he found himself in a port town where he heard rumors of a city across the ocean where he might be able to start a new life.
Allegiance: Mafioso
Reason: Life in the underworld of the city Mélusine is almost all Mildmay has ever known, and he feels more comfortable there than in respected society. He knows its dangers, but they’re things he is familiar with and knows how to deal with. What’s more, his only real skills are those of thief and assassin and he does not know how to be anything else.
my only faith's in the broken bones and bruises I display
